Lucky bean (UMUKO)

Erythrina abyssinica, commonly known as the flame tree or Umuko, is a medium?sized deciduous tree native to East Africa. It is admired for its spectacular clusters of red?orange flowers that brighten landscapes during the dry season and attract pollinators such as sunbirds and bees. Growing up to twelve meters tall, the tree enriches soils through nitrogen fixation, provides shade, and supports local ecosystems. Beyond its ecological role, Umuko holds deep cultural significance in Rwanda, symbolizing resilience and vitality, with its seeds often used in ornaments and traditional ceremonies. Medicinally, parts of the tree have long been used in herbal remedies, though caution is advised as the seeds can be toxic if crushed. Classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, Erythrina abyssinica remains an important species for conservation, education, and cultural heritage, making it a valuable addition to the EcoPlant Explorer platform.
